This umpteenth retelling of the Jekyll & Hyde story (though the names have been changed to Dr. Marlowe and Mr. Blake) is the visually-assured first work of its 22 year-old director and as a faithful translation of Stevenson's original text. Christopher Lee plays the stuffy doctor who develops an inhibition-releasing formula which turns him into a repulsive character who, with each successive dose, turns into a pitiful, ape-like monster. the film began as a 3-D production, but this was dropped when it proved difficult to implement effectively.
