MovieMail Description:Six timeless classics from Rodgers and Hammerstein - a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. Comprises: The Sound Of Music (Robert Wise, 1965). Despite its sentimentality, this still remains an enjoyable addition to the musical genre. Julie Andrew's gentle charisma adds great humour and sincerity to the picture. As its title suggests however, it is the score that remains timeless. Who could forget such gems as 'My Favourite Things', 'Do Re Mi', 'Edelweiss' and the haunting 'Climb Every Mountain'? The King And I (Walter Lang, 1956). One of the most sumptuous widescreen musicals to grace the screen. Brynner and Kerr command the screen in their roles as the King of Siam and Mrs Anna. The location shooting and interior design conjure a world of exotic opulence, reinforced by the Oriental subtleties of Richard Rodgers' melodic score. State Fair (Walter Lang, 1945). A lovely musical in which the Frake family go on an outing to the State Fair and each expects to win a prize. Features the song 'It Might As Well Be Spring.' Carousel (Henry King, 1956). A sombre addition to the musical genre as the ghost of a wastrel, killed during his attempted robbery, returns to earth to try to improve the lives of the family he left behind. Vivid colours, effective staging, and some enduring (and appropriately haunting) refrains bring this to life. Oaklahoma (Fred Zinnemann, 1955). A rather different western from the director of High Noon, with lovely photography, marvellous set pieces, and great songs. From Zinneman though, naturally, one gets a little food for the brain too. One of those musicals with a heart and a mind. Includes the songs 'Oh, what a beautiful morning' and the title song 'Oklahoma'. South Pacific (Joshua Logan, 1958). Fabulous locations, lush photography. An American navy nurse and a French planter fall in love on a pacific island. A film to share with a loved one. 'Happy Talk', 'Nothing Like A Dame' and 'Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair' are just three standout songs. Indulge yourself.
